The best place to find cheap colored laptops is to search online auctions and classifieds sites for used computers. There are a few select brand names that produce attractive cheap colored laptops. You can find the Dell Netbook computers for about $400 brand new.

If you purchase the computers with a prepaid internet plan, sometimes you will be able to purchase these computers for prices as low as $200. Though this is a great price for a computer, you will have to agree to a 2 year mobile internet plan. These mobile internet plans usually cost about $30 - $40 a month and only allow you 8 hours of internet usage each day. This is not a very good deal if you use the internet all the time. You will want a basic operating system, basic document creation software, protection from spyware and adware, firewall protection and other basic programs installed.

If you are buying a new computer, your computer will already have all of the basic programs that you need.

If you buy a used computer, the best thing to do is to get it checked out by a computer repair specialist after you receive your machine. Make sure that it is in the best condition it can be in before you start to use it. If you do not get it checked out by a certified computer specialist before you start to use it,you might not be able to get your money back or return the machine if you have problems with it.

Used laptops – Big performance at a smaller price

Used laptops can be a great solution if you need lots of power on a small budget.

There are lots of bargain priced notebook computers on the market. They frequently offer minimum performance at that price. The cheap new laptops are light weight, compact and carry a warranty so if you are not too demanding they might be your best option.

Used laptops, often a generation or more behind the latest-and-greatest offerings can still be powerful enough to run most of the current high powered software. Older machines often come with Windows XP installed instead of Windows Vista. From my perspective as software developer, XP is better than Vista for supporting much of my current software.

Used Laptop

I use my laptop as an alternative desktop machine. I don’t care if it’s heavy as long as it has a sharp, large screen, a super fast processor and can support at least 1 GB of memory. Windows XP only recognizes 3 GB. You don’t need more.

With lots of money invested in web development and animation software I was horrified to discover that Windows Vista was incompatible with much of my software. I am not about to sink thousands of dollars into new programs that supply most of the same functions that I use. I use my XP computer for development and my Vista machine for testing the end products. When I need a new work machine I need a used laptop or must replace much of my software.

You can find used laptops from a variety of sources. Craigslist.com and EBay spring to mind as places to look first. EBay would be my first choice because of the feedback features on the site.

An EBay seller will be fairly accurate about the condition and features of a machine in order to maintain good feedback but read the descriptions carefully.

A few cautions buying used laptops:

Over 50% of laptop failures result from the power jack failure. Repair cost is $100 to $150. Factory repair centers want $500 + to replace the motherboard. Not necessary.
Cooling is critical!!! Dust accumulates on the internal cooling fins. Compressed air can sometimes blow it. Nicotine will glue it in place and will require disassembly to remove.
Memory is inexpensive. Every model has limited capacity. Check the specs for the maximum supported by your model. Today’s software wants at least 1 GB for best performance.

Laptop Computer Brands: Making the Right Choice

Even if you know exactly what size, speed, and processing power you’re looking for in your new laptop, the wide selection of computer brands can leave you in a daze. With at least a dozen brands to choose from, how can you know that you’re making the right choice? The truth is that there are a lot of great computer brands. And to help you out, I’ve made a list of some of the most popular ones. Let’s take a look.

Laptop Computer Brands

Dell

Dell used to be the PC authority brand. They seem to be losing some of their recognition. Many complain of poor customer service, and Dell’s computers often seem a bit overpriced considering features and quality. If you take the time to look, you can probably find a better deal elsewhere.

Toshiba

Toshiba seems to make good laptops, but they can be a little pricey. Overall, tech support has a good reputation. If I found a good deal, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase a Toshiba computer.

HP/Compaq

HP merged with Compaq in 2002. HP/Compaq seems to make good, affordable computers. In fact, I’m typing this article up on a Compaq right now. I’ve been very happy with it. Costumer service does not have the best reputation, but I’ve personally never needed to use it.

Gateway

Gateways are cheap computers. Cheap price tags and cheap parts. If you take very good care of your machines, you might be fine with a Gateway. Otherwise, I’d be very cautious.

Apple

Here’s my take on the never-ending PC vs. Mac debate. Apple makes wonderful, reliable computers that are very pricey and sometimes suffer from compatibility issues. Make sure that you know what software you want to run before you buy a Mac. Double-check that there are Mac versions available. Then, if you have the budget to cover the price of a Mac, I would buy one. On the other hand, most Americans (like me) don’t have enough cash sitting around to pay Apple prices. I’ve always found PCs to be very adequate and much more affordable than Macs.

Sony’s VAIO

Sony makes some fast, high-quality laptops. But be prepared to pay for them. VAIOs are a great choice if you can afford the price tag.

Keep in mind that while we can make generalizations about brand names, each laptop is unique. It’s best to investigate the particular model that you are considering purchasing.

In the past decade, note taking in classrooms has evolved from pen and paper to keyboard buttons. Laptop computers have become a must have for all students entering college level courses. The question most of you parents face isn’t whether or not you should buy a laptop for your student, but rather which one to buy. With all of the specifications, brand names and bells and whistles added to laptops it can be a daunting task to sort through it all and make sure that you’re getting the most for your dollar. Allow me to help clarify what’s important for your student and what’s not.

Student Laptop Computer

The most important specification to look for while shopping for your student is the amount of RAM the laptop has. Generally speaking, most laptops will come with 1 to 4 gigabytes (GB). The more GBs their computer has, the faster it will run. Laptops running on Windows Vista will require at least 2 GBs of RAM to run smoothly. For students who will use their laptop primarily for email, typing and surfing the internet, 2 GBs will be more than adequate. However, if your student needs to run more robust software that is often used for programming, engineering/architecture or media, 4GBs is usually recommended (also for these students, having a dedicated graphics card is helpful as well).

When it comes to processors don’t spend extra money on higher speeds, spend money on more processors. Simply put, the more processors a laptop has, the more efficient it can run multiple programs at the same time. Each extra processor shares the workload with the others, causing the programs to run more efficiently. A common term you may see while shopping is dual-core (two processors) or quad-core (four-processors). Once again, if your student is only using their laptop for email, typing and surfing, one processor will do.

Lastly don’t waste money on excessive hard drive storage. Although it may be impressive to see a laptop that has 500 GBs of hard drive space, the odds are you’ll never use it all up. The most likely items to use up storage on a student’s laptop are music and photos, and 160 GB is usually sufficient for these. Storage space is easy and cheap to buy later on if needed. In addition to cost, the larger the hard drive, the heavier and less portable laptops become.

I am a computer enthusiast who has been working with not only laptops and computers, but other electronics as well. New Laptop Computers

The first thing you want to check is the portability. You want to check if the portability fits your needs. This is your own judgment as you are the only one who knows what you are going to do with the laptop. Another thing you want to check is the weight. This is also another factor that has to do with your own personal taste, but the lighter the better in most cases.

The next thing you want to check are the specification. There are numerous specifications that will get most people confused, so here are some of the things you should look out for.

You want to make sure the battery life is decent. If you are going to be using it at home the whole time with a charger, this should not be a problem. If you are someone who carries it around often, it is better to have longer battery life.
The next thing you want to check is the processor speed. This is also called the CPU speed (central processing unit). This is one of the most significant parts of the computer you are looking for. You want to make sure it is at least dual core. The next thing you want to check is the amount of RAM. You want to make sure the laptop has around 2 GB to 4 GB RAM. The more the better, but you are looking for at least 2 GB.
The last thing you want to check is the amount of hard drive space. The hard drive is where the user stores all the information, and the bigger hard drive the better. Compact notebook computers are gaining more attention nowadays. Since the early 2000's it seems as if computers and other electronic devices are shrinking and drastically becoming more streamlined. Before you even think about what kind of laptop you want to buy, you should think about what exactly you will be using it for. If you are someone who simply wants a way to check their email or browse through some online shopping, you will most likely not be needing a top of the line expensive machine. For example, I wanted a laptop I could use professionally, (doing word documents, spread sheets, etc) but still could have a lot of fun on, (like playing some games, or watching a movie, or listening to music). But how do you know whether your machine can do any of this? In fact, how can you judge the quality at all? Get ready for a crash course in getting to know computers (I promise, not scary at all!).

Laptop Notebooks

If we look up a computer, laptop or desktop, you should find a listing of the specs, or specifications. This is a list of what the computer is made up of. This is where you will learn what your machine will be capable of.

Memory: No, this doesn't mean what your computer remembers, or the storage capacity, or anything like that. Memory is the amount of programs you can run simultaneously on your computer without it choking up. Any "decent" computer nowadays comes with at least 2 GB (or gigabytes) or memory. 4 GB of memory is superb. If you want to get an idea of how much memory a program uses, hold down the "Ctrl," "Alt," and "Delete" keys simultaneously. you will get a window that pops up that tells you what programs you are using right now. If you click on the "Processes" tab, you will see how much memory those programs are using.
Hard drive: This specification is how much "stuff" your computer can hold. How many files you can save on there, how much music, etc. 250 GB is a decent amount of space, and you can always find solutions to space problems, by having external hard drives and the likes.
Operating System: Not that there is much to discuss here, but it is worth mentioning that if you were to go out right now and buy a notebook laptop, it will most likely come with a Windows Vista operating system. Now, there are those that strongly criticize Vista, but my laptop came with it, and I have had zero problems, and any typical user should share the same experience.

With these simple things under your belt, you should be able to narrow down your computer search, and save yourself from buying something you don't need.

Now, as for brand names, there is a lot of prestige surrounding the "Macbook," and it is also very expensive, so personally I believe that if you don't know whether or not you need a Macbook, definitely think twice before even considering one. It is a terrific piece of equipment, with some very nice perks but completely superfluous if you just want something affordable to check your mail with.

As for other brands, HP and Dell seem to be the two most popular, but, excluding Apple products, the brand name won't tell you nearly as much about the quality of the computer as the specs. Always check the comments about a product before you buy it, and if many people are leaving discouraging notices about the quality of the product they bought, avoid it. I looked up laptops online and checked what other people were saying even though I was buying mine from a Costco (just goes to show you not to discriminate about where you buy your laptop).

There are a few things that you should look for when you're trying to determine which of the many Notebook Computers on the market you should buy. There are many options out there and many different sizes of computer. If you've never purchased a notebook before, the options can seem overwhelming. Just keep in mind that a lot of these options are not things that you will need to concern yourself with.

Notebook Computers have changed to meet the times. Many people use Notebook Computers for tons of things that you will personally never ever do. You must first take a look at your needs. Even if you don't currently have a digital camera, will you be getting one? Are you trying to start participating in online board meetings for your job?
